Best walks in Edinburgh

My mum always says “walking is the best form of exercise” and although its probably not 100% true, there are definitely some major plus points including the satisfaction of reaching 10,000 steps on your Fitbit and actually being able to enjoy the surroundings instead of wanting to collapse in a heap on the floor during a run. I have compiled my list of my favourite walks in Edinburgh since recently I have been doing a lot of Sunday walking with my friend Caroline.

  • The Hermitage of Braid and Blackford Hills. With this walk you get the best of both worlds, a wooded walk at the Braids followed by beautiful views over Edinburgh once you climb Blackford Hill. I like this walk because it is a fairly short circular walk (takes approx 1.5 hours) with a cute little cafe half way round incase you need a coffee. The hill itself isn’t too taxing to climb either, which is always nice.
  • Water of Leith. This walk is right on my doorstep so theres no need to drive and park anywhere. You can walk the entire route which is 35km or there are loads of places that you can join or leave it. As the name suggests you walk alongside a river the whole way, making it really nice and peaceful.  In September they have a rubber duck race where you buy ducks and then they are released in aid of the Water of Leith Conservation Trust.
  • Arthur’s seat. This is probably the most well-known hill as it is the closest of my recommendations to the city centre. This is a really nice hill with stunning views although, it is actually quite exhausting to climb and on a good day it is usually packed full of people.
  • Yellowcraigs beach walk. This is quite far out of Edinburgh but you can make a day of it visiting the quaint town of North Berwick whist your in that neck of the woods. The walk from the car park is over sand dunes leading to the beach, then you can walk as far as you want along the beach before heading back. Because I live in the city, I am rarely at the beach unless I am on holiday and this is why I like this walk so much. The beach is so pretty and I love the smell of the sea air.

If you live in Edinburgh or are coming for a holiday, I would definitely recommend these walks. Not only is walking fantastic for clearing your head, it is really fun to do with friends whilst having a catch up and it doesn’t cost a penny!
